About us

With over 100 members and 50 volunteers, The Leatherhead Swans Club is the largest multi-activity sports club for the disabled in the south of England and affiliated to PHAB. Based in Leatherhead, Surrey, the ‘Swans Club’ was established in 1975 to offer disabled people a range of physical and social activities to engage them in the community, providing a positive focus on their abilities and what people can do, rather than their limitations.

Our Activities

We engage people with a range of permanent or temporary disabilities in physically and mentally stimulating activities that have an incredibly positive and life enhancing effect. Involvement in activities such as Swimming, Bowls, Gym, Boccia, Kurling and exercise, including some competitive events, benefits our members in a number of ways. In addition to the advantages of exercise, people coming to the Leatherhead Swans Club can access other activities such as Bingo, Craft activities, Dance, Karaoke and Dough Disco. Get to meet new people, make lasting friendships and be part of a thriving social scene that builds confidence and independence.

In 2003 we proudly received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for voluntary groups in the community in recognition of our valuable work with the disabled.
Our variety of sports, leisure and social activities are supported by our invaluable volunteers and instructors whose contribution to The Leatherhead Swans Club and commitment to its members ensures our members have an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

We have special equipment to make your swim enjoyable, whilst qualified lifeguards are on duty to ensure your safety, in the water the ratio for all our swimmers is 1:1 where necessary. It’s amazing to see the transformation of those normally confined to a wheelchair or otherwise impaired, when they enter the pool and move under their own power enjoying the freedom of the water. Additionally, members can learn to swim, achieve various certifications or take part in competitive swimming at our Galas. Aqua Aerobics sessions are once a month. Full disabled change and hoist to access the pool are readily available.

The Tylney Room is the meeting point for members that offers a place to socialise with friends or play boards games like Boccia, Table Tennis and Kurling, or to just listen to music and have a drink and snack.

Members can also take part in craft-based activities such as making cards and jewellery, Bingo, Darts, Karaoke, Film night, Dance and our weekly raffle or the ever popular Dough Disco.

Half hour sessions with a Qualified Gym Instructor and volunteers put members to the test. Members are given an introduction to the equipment with a personal fitness assessment and individual exercise programme. This helps to build fitness and muscle tone, as well as providing a boost to your confidence and self-esteem.

Working in collaboration with Mole Valeey Indoor Bowls Club, we use a wonderful indoor Bowls Hall and play from one end. A team of bowlers meet every week to learn new skills, either working towards a competition, or just for fun! Volunteers and many bowlers join in to offer advice and support.

The Swans also organise a range of social events including barbecues, special event evenings, workshops and outings. We aim to create events that enrich and empower the lives of our members and help them achieve independence.
